142. Captain John George MOWLL RN240 was born on 6 May 1821 in Dover, Kent, England, United Kingdom.39,241 He was baptized on 25 May 1821 at St Mary The Virgin in Dover, Kent, England, United Kingdom.241 He died in 1908 at the age of 87 in Whitford, North Wales, UK.106 John was a Master Mariner.242 He was a Superintendant of Birkenhead Ferries in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom. He lived 10 Camden Street in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom.242 There is a short history of George's life from 1854, and his career with the Birkenhead Ferries. That came to an abrupt end in 1894 when he had to resign because of a problem with one of the ferry committee members, a Mr Holden a solicitor, who asked some questions about coal deliveries. Apparently, accusations were made as to the amounts delivered , and to the whereabouts of the delivery notes to check against what is delivered. George was responsible to check the loads, but unfortunately he threw the notes away. The case went to court in Birkenhead, but was thrown out through lack of evidence.Captain Pinney Manager of the ferries, threatened Mr Holden, waving his fist under his nose,. and calling him a black guard. George and Captain Pinney, were asked to resign, which they did,and they applied for the positions of assistant manager and assistant inspector respectively. Captain Pinney got the position, but George did not. He was 73yrs old after all.

As there is no record of George and Anne in the record books at the Birkenhead library after 1894 I assume they went to Anne's home village of Whitford North Wales. They lived with their granddaughter until they died, Anne in 1906 and George in 1908

Captain Pinney and George Mowll made statements to the ferry committee regarding the coal affair. They were put in the ferry committee records, then the committee voted to have them expunged. They did this by sticking thick brown paper over them.
