His sons Robert and Reginald were orphaned in England during WWII at the ages of 4 and 10, respectively. They both went to orphanages for two years awaiting help from the Mowll family. Unfortunately, they were both Catholic while the rest of the local Mowll family were Church of England, and Mabel had succeeded in alienating the local family sufficiently during her life, so no help was forthcoming on the English side of the Atlantic. They were finally rescued by his aunt, Violet (Mowll) Handman, in Redlands, California, USA. They made the perilous wartime Atlantic crossing with the aid of their uncle, George Mowll, and finished their journey via train across America to California in 1942. Robert (Bobby) was adopted by an American doctor and his family in Colton, California, changing his name to Robert Brian Smith.
